Older Simplicity Sloper Compared to the Newer “Retro” Release

Posted on

I see recent interest in this post so I’m editing because the main content was posted at The Sewing Divas blog.

Simplicity release 3833 in 2007, a “Retro” pattern:

3833

of this pattern originally published in the 1960’s:

Simplicity8498

Here’s is the pattern comparison. The blue lines are the 1960’s pattern, the red 2007:

ComBack

ComFrontltr

ComBodice

There are only 3 pieces. The main changes have been to lower the bust point, alter the shape of the skirt’s flare so it doesn’t swing to the back and make the neckline higher

Simplicity has been very responsive to modern garment sewers’ requests and interests, traveling to different sewing expos to visit with the current sewing enthusiasts and display their new designs. The company has recently closed it’s aging pattern printing plant in Michigan and is now having patterns printed by a third party.

Company representatives have stated that the company is doing well and will continue to produce quality patterns, calming fears the sewing public has had over losing the last “independent “of the Big Four pattern companies. Mc Calls, Vogue and Butterick are now owned by the same company, the Mc Call Pattern Company, which includes a wall paper division, Wallies, .

About Mary Beth

I am fascinated by changing patterns and colored threads. I sew garments and am teaching myself to machine knit. Since selling the building that housed my workrooms, The Stitchery, I'm searching for a place to set up the knitting machines again. There must be room here somewhere!

  1. Thank you for the information, I haven’t purchased a new pattern in years. I’m still using the ones I have. I didn’t know about McCall’s owning Voque and Butterrick, but I’m glad they will still be available if I need them.
